During my third semester at BYU I took Persuasive Writing. That class completely changed my attitude towards writing—which before then was mostly despairing—and sucked me into the writing and rhetoric minor. Since then my writing classes have not only been a welcome break from the technical grind of my engineering major but have introduced me to new ways of communicating and thinking. I’ve not only learned how to write and speak more proficiently but also how to analyze and engage with others’ communications. This minor has prepared me for a broad range of rhetorical situations, from cover letters and job interviews to family political debates or conflicts among friends. I fully recommend this minor to anyone that wants to more fully engage with the social world around them through reading, writing, or speaking.
